Old City Cemetery is proud to be a Commemorative Partner of VA250—the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission. Of the thirteen original colonies, none played as fundamental a role as Virginia in the formation of our country. From the ideas that inspired it, to the battlefields that decided it, there is simply no America without it. As we mark 250 years of Independence, now is the perfect time for you to reconnect with your country in the place that made it possible. Please join us at VA250.org.
Old City Cemetery is home to at least 16 Revolutionary War Patriots, as well as hundreds of early founders of the City of Lynchburg. Originally established on land donated by city founder John Lynch himself, we serve as the final resting place for the men and women who shaped America in its infancy. Lynchburg, though not officially a city in 1776, was a sort of gateway toward westward expansion. The batteau, which was instrumental in carrying munitions, supplies and other things up and down the James River during the Revolution, was developed right here. Thomas Jefferson, a frequent patron to Lynchburg’s many taverns and inns, believed in this city’s crucial role in our developing nation.
Old City Cemetery partners with LYH250 in their local efforts to commemorate this special anniversary. We are excited to share events and programs with our community that strengthen our connection to the past, and to one another in the present.
Forward to Freedom!
